Vehicle stop ends in drug bust

Two people have been charged after a vehicle stop led to the seizure of drugs.

At 4:15 p.m. Friday, a Cole County Sheriff's Department deputy was in the 8000 block of U.S. 50 and attempted to stop a green Buick.

The vehicle tried to evade the deputy by turning off the road, but the deputy caught up to the vehicle in the 7300 block of Business 50.

Upon contact, the deputy smelled the odor of marijuana from the vehicle.

After getting permission to search, a one-pound bag of marijuana was seized.

Both subjects in the vehicle were arrested and taken to the Cole County Jail without incident.

The Cole County prosecutor charged both with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

Beroldo Almazan posted a $25,000 bond and was released.

Gilberto Hurtado has a $50,000 bond and is still in custody.

The vehicle was also seized and criminal seizure will be completed.
