Your Opinion: Proud descendent of hillbillies

Dear Editor:

In the interest of full disclosure, I must confess that I am the proud descendent of Ozark hillbillies.

When I was a young child my parents had a service station on U.S. 54 near Brazito. On one occasion a couple in an out-of-state car stopped to buy gasoline.

The lady asked my mother how much farther she and her husband needed to go before they could see hillbillies. My mother politely and with pride told her they had come far enough. The lady seemed surprised since all of us were wearing shoes.

Over 50 years ago I moved to Jefferson City with my three children (all of us wearing shoes.) I still live here. Perhaps it is I and others like me who are the reason that some newcomers think the conditions of our city with its poorly planned traffic flow and infrastructure, etc. make us look like hillbillies.

Whatever that means, it must have been a compliment since they love living here enough to want to help us improve. There is always room for improvement so I am happy to welcome them to Jefferson City.

I love it, too.
