To preserve retail space downtown, the Fulton City Council has moved a step closer to restricting residential use of downtown buildings.
The council Tuesday night gave first-round approval to the "DREAM" plan.
The measure came in the form of a zoning restriction on use of the first floor of buildings located within the downtown designated DREAM district.
The zoning restriction would prohibit any new use of first floors of buildings in the district for residential use. Under a grandfather clause, any existing use of a first floor of buildings for residential purposes will continue to be permitted.
