One family recounts heroin nightmare

February 6th, 2012 in News

No individual or family is immune to the consequences of drugs and drug use.

Carole and Troy Jones know that all too well.

The Jones are both addicts in recovery. Carole says she and husband, Troy, used a variety of substances. But it was a drug they had never used, heroin, that claimed the life of their oldest son, Trent, when he was just 17 in 2010.

Troy believes that his son had his first trouble with drugs when he was in foster care, after the Joneses had entered treatment programs.

"He was about 13 and got caught with pot on him at school - trying to sell it," Troy said.

By the time he was 14, Trent and his siblings had returned to their parents' home; Troy and Carole were committed to their recovery and life seemed to be finally calming down for the family.

Since the family was reunited, Carole notes that from time to time she and Trent would have talks about his drug use.

"He and I were very, very close, and he was very honest with me," she said.
