Sites across Missouri celebrate feats of black Americans

February is Black History Month, and Missouri is filled with places that offer interactive lessons on the Show-Me-State's most influential black Americans.

Stay close to home or hit the road to visit these attractions that highlight African-American contributions in everything from sports and music to education and science.

In addition to these permanent sites, the state's commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War offer statewide opportunities to learn more about memorable figures from that era such as Dred Scott and Moses Lax.

"The sites around Missouri where the contributions of African Americans are celebrated serve as a meaningful reminder of what people can accomplish, even when the obstacles facing them are overwhelming," said Katie Steele Danner, Missouri Division of Tourism director.
