Your Opinion: Initiative will capitalize on assets

Dear Editor:

On Feb. 7, Jefferson City voters will have an opportunity to say "yes" to Transforming Jefferson City and improving the future of our community. I was involved in the Transformation Action Teams and was extremely pleased with the overwhelming interest and support of hundreds of community members.

Jefferson City is a wonderful place to live and work but there is so much more Jefferson City can offer. Jefferson City is somewhat unique - we are the capital city, we have the Missouri River, we have a university, we have a hospital that will be vacated in the next several years. Many of the Transformation initiatives involve taking what already exists and capitalizing on these assets so they become valuable economic contributions to our community.

Statistics show that the Jefferson City population is aging which means we are losing our young citizens to other areas, and along with them, their talent. The projects proposed in the Transformation initiatives will position Jefferson City to be competitive in retaining as well as attracting talent and new business investments.

If we want Jefferson City to experience economic growth, then we need to pass the one-half cent sales tax.

Please Transform Jefferson City, vote "yes" on Tuesday, February 7.
