St. Louis Co. steps up mosquito-fighting effort

August 30th, 2012 in News

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) - West Nile virus cases are on the rise in many parts of the country, and while no human cases have been reported in St. Louis County, health officials aren't taking any chances.

The county health department says it is increasing spraying and awareness efforts. Adding to concern is the expected onslaught of rain in Missouri resulting from Hurricane Isaac. Up to 4 inches of rain is possible this weekend in St. Louis, and more water typically means more mosquitoes.

Residents are urged to take steps to get rid of standing water by draining garbage cans, buckets, toys, wading pools and other items where water collects.
