St. Charles Co. GOP supports Akin

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) - The Republican central committee in Missouri's third-largest county is standing behind GOP Senate nominee Todd Akin.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/Q4J0DY ) reports that the St. Charles County Republican Central Committee said in a resolution Thursday that Akin has been sincere in apologizing and seeking forgiveness for remarks he made about rape.

Chairman Jon Bennett says a vast majority of committee members supported the resolution. He declined to release an exact vote breakdown.

Akin won the Aug. 7 primary and says he will stay in the race against Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill in November despite calls from many within his own party to get out. The uproar began when Akin said in a TV interview that women's bodies can shut down pregnancy after what he called "legitimate" rape.
