Third lawsuit challenges 'payday loan' signatures

Jefferson City attorney Chuck Hatfield's clients don't like the idea of capping "payday loan" interest rates at 36 percent.

They've tried several times to block the initiative petition campaign, and last week they filed:

• A motion to intervene in a lawsuit by supporters trying to get the issue on the ballot, arguing that Secretary of State Robin Carnahan didn't count enough valid signatures on the submitted petitions.

• Their own lawsuit alleging Carnahan counted too many signatures to qualify the issue for the ballot.
