A St. James man tried to escape from Maries County deputies Friday evening after he was arrested for allegedly driving a stolen truck.

Cole P. Woodward, 19, was taken into custody during a traffic stop on U.S. 63 in Vienna. The vehicle he was driving had been stolen from a tow yard in Phelps County, according to Maries County Sheriff Chris Heitman.

The sheriff also said Woodward gave a false ID. He was taken to the sheriff's office at the courthouse where he attempted to escape by kicking out a window. After a brief struggle, deputies subdued Woodward and placed him in jail.

The suspect faces charges in Maries County of attempted escape, property damage and false impersonation. A Phelps County charge for stealing the vehicle also may be sought.

He was held in the Maries County Jail with bond set at $25,000.
