Jefferson City firefighters battle a blaze at Precision Machine Inc., 1703 Christy Drive, on Thursday evening.

The cause of a fire that heavily damaged a Jefferson City machine shop Thursday night is still under investigation.

The fire at Precision Machine Inc., 1703 Christy Drive, was called in around 6:30 p.m.

When crews arrived on the scene, they found fire in the front of the building, which quickly spread to the rear where the machine shop is located.

The fire and smoke appeared to be coming from the ceiling of the structure, so fire crews sprayed water in the roof area. Crews eventually got on top of the building to poke holes in the roof to allow the building to cool down, once the fire had been extinguished.

Additional crews were called in to help fight the blaze and man stations in the city in case other calls came in. The Cole County Fire Protection District also sent equipment and personnel to the fire.

Bystanders said no one was in the building at the time of the fire. Turner could not confirm that, but no injuries were reported.
