Wednesday's American League Capsules

BOSTON (AP) - Adrian Beltre had a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the ninth inning after Texas blew a late four-run lead and the Rangers beat Boston 10-9 on Wednesday.

Josh Hamilton homered among his three hits and had four RBIs for Texas, which couldn't hold a 9-5 lead before pulling out its sixth win in eight games.

Mitch Moreland, Nelson Cruz and Geovany Soto also homered for the Rangers. It was Soto's first with Texas since being acquired from the Cubs in a non-waiver deadline deal last week.

The AL West-leading Rangers took two of three from Boston, closing their road trip at 4-2.

Will Middlebrooks had a three-run homer for the second straight game. Cody Ross added a solo shot and drove in two runs for Boston, which has lost six of eight.

Alexi Ogando (2-0) worked two perfect innings of relief for the win. Joe Nathan pitched the ninth for his 23rd save.

With the score tied 9-all, Elvis Andrus walked and moved to third on Hamilton's single off Clayton Mortensen (1-1).

ATHLETICS 9, ANGELS 8

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Chris Carter hit a two-run homer to cap a five-run sixth inning and Oakland overcame a shaky outing by rookie Dan Straily.

George Kottaras homered and Yoenis Cespedes added a two-run single for the A's, who won the final two games of the series against their division rivals after losing the opener.

Oakland improved to 17-8 since the All-Star break.

Kendrys Morales hit two of the Angels' five home runs. Four were off Straily, the right-hander who was making only his second career start.

Zack Greinke walked five in five innings, remaining winless since his trade from Milwaukee to the Angels.

Pat Neshek (1-0) recorded one out in the sixth for his first win with the A's. Ryan Cook, the sixth Oakland pitcher, gave up two runs in the ninth before locking down his 12th save.

The A's beat the Angels for the seventh time this season.

INDIANS 6, TWINS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Justin Masterson pitched seven strong innings and Shin-Soo Choo went 4-for-4 as Cleveland ended an 11-game losing streak.

The Indians avoided tying the 1931 franchise record for consecutive losses. Cleveland, which was outscored 95-36 in the streak, won for the first time since July 26.

Masterson (8-10) allowed two runs and three hits in seven innings. His only mistake came when Alexi Casilla hit his first home run of the season - a two-run shot in the fifth.

Choo drove in two runs with a double in the first and a single in the second.

Brian Duensing (2-7) allowed six runs, four earned, and 11 hits in seven innings.

Ben Revere was hitless in four at-bats, ending his 21-game hitting streak.

YANKEES 12, TIGERS 8

DETROIT (AP) - Curtis Granderson snapped out of a short slump by hitting his 30th homer and driving four runs to help New York end Detroit's six-game winning streak.

Down 7-0, the Tigers chased CC Sabathia and closed to 8-7 in the seventh inning.

The AL East-leading Yankees, who had lost 12 of their previous 18 games, then pulled away. Detroit had won 10 straight at home, matching its best streak in 13 seasons at Comerica Park.

Granderson batted sixth for the first time since May 15 because he had two straight 0-for-5 games and just four hits in his previous 25 at-bats. The lineup shakeup seemed to work as he had an RBI single in the first, a home run in the third and a double in the seventh. He matched his season high for RBIs.

Sabathia (12-3) gave up five runs - three earned - and eight hits while striking out seven over 6 2-3 innings.

Anibal Sanchez (1-2) gave up seven runs, seven hits, walked two and hit two batters over three-plus innings. He made his third start since being traded from Miami to Detroit.

Omar Infante's solo homer in the eighth off David Robertson pulled the Tigers within 10-8.

ORIOLES 9, MARINERS 2

BALTIMORE (AP) - Steve Johnson struck out nine over six innings in his first major league start and Matt Wieters tied a career high with five RBIs as Baltimore swept the three-game series.

Nick Markakis and Mark Reynolds homered and Adam Jones had three hits for the Orioles, who have won five straight and eight of 10. It was Baltimore's 60th victory of the season, compared to 69 all last year.

The Orioles built a 7-0 lead by the fourth inning against former teammate Kevin Millwood (4-10) and cruised to the finish in their sixth sweep of 2012.

Johnson (1-0) gave up two runs, five hits and two walks in his second big-league appearance. The 24-year-old was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to sub for Tommy Hunter, who was scratched because he threw in the bullpen Tuesday night in anticipation of entering a game that lasted 14 innings.

Johnson is the son of former Orioles pitcher Dave Johnson, who now works for the team's TV network. Steve Johnson's debut as a starter came exactly 23 years after his father made his first career start in Baltimore, a complete-game win against Minnesota.

Kyle Seager hit his team-high 13th homer, the second in two nights, and finished with three hits in the Mariners' fourth straight defeat.

RAYS 3, BLUE JAYS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Alex Cobb pitched seven solid innings for Tampa Bay.

The Rays clinched their 16th consecutive home series win over Toronto by winning the first two games of the three-game set. The longest such streak in AL history is 19, held by the New York Yankees against the St. Louis Browns from 1946-51.

Cobb (6-8) allowed one run and five hits, striking out seven.

After Joel Peralta fanned all three batters he faced in the eighth, Fernando Rodney got his 34th save despite giving up David Cooper's one-out, solo homer in the ninth.

Evan Longoria went 0-for-4, including three strikeouts, in his second game back as the Rays' designated hitter after sitting out 85 games because of a partially torn left hamstring.

Carlos Villanueva (6-2), who rejoined the team Tuesday after tending to a personal matter, gave up three runs and six hits in six innings for the Blue Jays, who have lost eight of 11, scoring just 29 runs over the stretch.

ROYALS 2, WHITE SOX 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Jeremy Guthrie picked up his first victory since late May, scattering five hits over eight innings for Kansas City.

Guthrie (1-3) got his first win with the Royals and improved to 4-12 overall since arriving in a late July trade with Colorado. He struck out five and walked none.

His last victory was an 11-5 decision over Houston on May 31. He struggled through nine losses in his next 13 appearances.

Solo home runs by Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez provided all the runs for Kansas City.

Greg Holland gave up a run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth but picked up his third save.

Jose Quintana (4-2) worked seven innings and gave up five hits. He walked two and struck out five.

Kansas City took two of three in the series. Chicago had won its last four series and five straight at home.
