SAR chapter honors Tyler Huffman

Marine Cpl. Tyler Huffman received the 2012 Patriots Day Award presented by the Christopher Casey Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution at ceremonies held Saturday in Jefferson City.

Huffman, a Fulton native, was injured in Afghanistan when he was struck in the chest by an enemy sniper. His injuries left him in a wheelchair and paralyzed from the waist down. He was awarded the Purple Heart by the U.S. Marines.

The chapter also recognized the exemplary service of other people at its annual observance of the start of the American Revolutionary War. The Law Enforcement Award was given to officer Curtis Bohanan and Det. Chris Suchanek.

The Firefighters Award went to Capt. Steve Holtmeier, the Eagle Scout Award to Andrew P. Scavone and the Sea Cadet Award to Raymond Ritchey. The Missouri Society Silver Medal was presented to chapter member Charles A. Newman for his years of dedicated service to the chapter.

Capt. Tim Young of the Jefferson City Fire Department gave a speech about the history of the fire department.

Newly elected chapter officers were installed by past state President Cliff Olsen. Steve Newman became president; Dale Schmidt, vice president; Joe Coy, secretary and Earnie Mowry, treasurer.
