Your Opinion: Another transformation

Your Opinion: Another transformation

April 22nd, 2012 by Frank Rycyk, Jefferson City in News

Dear Editor:

"Transformation" has been in the news. Dozens of civic-minded individuals have come together in a spirit of cooperation, toward the goal of making the City of Jefferson a more attractive place for business to locate.

Another kind of "transformation" is in the works, both inter-human and inter-religious. The Capital Area Interfaith Alliance, in cooperation with Lincoln University, is playing an important role in this transformation.

On Thursday, a Symposium on Religious Freedom and the First Amendment was held bringing together people from many different faith groups.

One of the goals of the Chamber of Commerce's "Transformation" process involves the medical community. Physician recruitment is an important part of making our medical facilities even better.

What happens when a top-quality physician, of different faith group, moves to the City of Jefferson. Does he feel welcome? Does his family feel welcome in our community? Sometimes we could do better.

Recall 150 years ago when Catholics first came to town. They were not welcome. Today they are regarded as upstanding citizens. Will Muslim's one day be as well-accepted as Catholics. I hope so.

Our symposium is moving us one quarter of an inch in the direction of inter-human harmony. We can do much ore. We've got to start somewhere.
