Cole County Circuit Clerk Brenda Umstattd resigned Wednesday, shortly after State Auditor Tom Schweich released a report identifying three key problem areas in the circuit clerk's office operations.

Gov. Jay Nixon will name Umstattd's successor, Presiding Circuit Judge Patricia Joyce said in a statement. Until then, Joyce will act as the circuit clerk's appointing authority.

In his 19-page audit, Schweich cited "deficiencies in internal controls, noncompliance with legal provisions" and some missing money as the main problem areas.

"Receipts totaling at least $14,669 were received but not deposited" in the circuit court's Criminal Division, between April 1, 2010, and June 30, 2011, Schweich reported.
