Expanded sales tax petitions blocked by judge

Saying they were "inadequate and unfair as a matter of law," Cole County Presiding Circuit Judge Patricia Joyce on Friday ordered State Auditor Tom Schweich's office to prepare "new fiscal notes and fiscal note summaries" for two initiative petitions seeking a statewide vote to expand sales taxes and eliminate Missouri's income taxes.

She also rewrote the ballot title for the two petitions.

Her actions effectively block supporters of the proposed changes from circulating petitions until the auditor completes the work and the new language can be shown on petitions.

But the deadline for submitting petitions, in order to get issues on the Nov. 6 election ballot, is May 6 - just three weeks from today.
