Recalls this week: Dirt bikes, dishwashers, cribs

Dirt bikes with faulty gas tanks, dishwashers that can overheat, and cribs that could suffocate a child are among the consumer products recalled this week because of safety issues. Other products include bicycles with faulty suspension forks and utility vehicles with unreliable brakes.

Here's a closer look at the recalled products:

DIRT BIKES

DETAILS: Baja Motorsports model DR50 and DR70 Baja dirt bikes with a vehicle identification number beginning with "L98," the letter "B" as the 10th character of the VIN and having a yellow dot or line marked on or near the VIN. The bikes were sold between Dec. 2010 and Jan. 2012. An initial recall was announced in March 2011.

WHY: The fuel tank can leak, posing a fire and burn hazard.

INCIDENTS: 16 reports of fires from leaking fuel tanks, including three reports of minor burns.

DISHWASHERS

DETAILS: Viking Range 24-inch Professional, Designer and Custom Panel dishwashers made between May and September of 2010. They were sold in black, white and 24 other custom colors, stainless steel, and with custom wood panels. The name "Viking" appears on the control panel at the top of the door.

WHY: An electrical component in the dishwasher can overheat, posing a fire hazard.

INCIDENTS: 21 reports, including five of property damage from fires. No injuries have been reported.

CRIBS

DETAILS: Nan Far Woodworking Co.'s Rockland Furniture brand drop-side cribs imported and sold by J.C. Penney Co. from 2005 to 2008. The wooden cribs used plastic hardware to attach the drop side. "Rockland Furniture" and the model number can be found on a rectangular label located on the lower portion of the headboard panel. The following six drop-side crib models are included in the recall: 343-8124 Nightingale Spindle Drop-Side Crib; 343-8280 Cottage Standard Drop-Side Crib Version 1; 343-8271 Cottage Standard Drop-Side Crib Version 2; 343-9105 Drop-Side Crib and Changer; 343-8191 Renew Standard Drop-Side Crib; and 343-8192 Renew Convertible Drop-Side Crib.

WHY: The drop sides can malfunction, detach or otherwise fail, causing it to fall out of position. This creates a space that can pose a strangulation or suffocation hazard. A child could also fall out of the crib.

INCIDENTS: Five incidents involving drop sides malfunctioning, including one where a child became trapped and suffered minor scratches and bruises.

UTILITY AND TRANSPORT VEHICLES

DETAILS: Club Car LLC gas and electric powered utility and transport vehicles. They are used for short-distance transportation and vary in models and sizes. They were sold in April and May of 2011.

WHY: The brake pedal mounting blocks can crack and separate, resulting in a loss of braking ability and possibly in a crash.

INCIDENTS: None reported.

BICYCLES

DETAILS: GT, Giant and Trek bicycles with SR Suntour suspension forks sold between April 2011 and March 2012. The SR Suntour suspension fork date codes range from CK110301 to CK110731. The codes are printed on the back of the fork crown.

WHY: The suspension fork can break and cause the rider to lose control.

INCIDENTS: 12 reports, including 2 injuries involving a laceration and a chipped tooth.
