Our Opinion: Volunteer to SERVE community

The aim is to SERVE.

Organizers of SERVE Jeff City now are recruiting volunteers to participate in community cleanup and beautification projects on April 21.

SERVE is a partnership among area organizations, agencies and businesses.

Based on a concept developed by hYPe, a group of young professionals within the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce, the partnership includes the United Way of Central Missouri, Jefferson City Area YMCA, Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Department, Downtown Jefferson City, Lincoln University and a number of area businesses.

The partners hope to recruit 300 volunteers to help at 11 project sites in the community. The projects are designed to clean, beautify and improve the city.

Volunteers will gather at 8:30 a.m. on April 21 for a pancake breakfast and are scheduled to finish at noon. A project list and sign-up sheet are available online at servejeffcity.event

Projects include: downtown tree planting and mulching; Greenway trimming and landscaping; planting and weeding at roundabouts; planting on the Lincoln University campus; and a range of other activities.

SERVE Jeff City characterizes itself as "a volunteer organization gathered to making significant impacts on our community through fun and family-oriented volunteer efforts."

We value this and similar efforts because they invite participants to forge new friendships, share a common effort and enhance our community.
