Recalling fun of being on the water with family

April 8th, 2012 by Brandon Butler, columnist, outdoors@newstribune.com in News

After quietly slipping from our cabin in the predawn darkness of an early spring morning, I pulled my jacket a little tighter as I stood watching my breath float through the light of a full moon.

In a couple of hours, once the sun broke over the horizon, the jacket wouldn't be necessary. But for now, especially once the boat was ripping down the lake, I'd have to wear it or freeze.

I checked my supplies - rods and reels, tackle boxes, crickets, a thermos of steaming coffee, apples and granola bars. Everything we needed was on board. Now, as soon as the old man showed up we'd be on our way to the bluegill spawning beds.

Grandpa had been retired for a few years and it showed in everything he did.
