JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri lawmaker says anyone in the state should be allowed to celebrate any federal holiday in any public place.
Republican House member Rick Brattin, of Harrisonville, is sponsoring a measure that would forbid state and local governments from restricting the mention, celebration, or discussion of any federal holiday in public places. Those places include public buildings, parks and public schools.
The legislation makes one exception: Rules and laws covering the use of fireworks could still be enforced.
The measure has been approved by the House and has been introduced in the Senate.
Some federal holidays, such as Christmas, are based on religious traditions, but Brattin says people should have a right to celebrate them openly. Easter is not a federal holiday.
