Republic school board to discuss book ban changes

September 19th, 2011 in News

REPUBLIC, Mo. (AP) - After a decision to ban two books drew national attention, a southwest Missouri school district will discuss revising its book policy.

The governing board of the Republic school district will meet Monday to discuss the policy that led to pulling "Slaughterhouse-Five" and "Twenty Boy Summer" from the school.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that ( a proposed revision of the book standards would allow books that do not meet the standards to be available but housed in a separate section of the library. And they could be checked out only by a parent or guardian.

The current policy removed the books from the high school. The rest of the policy - which says books that fail to meet district standards will be allowed only for independent reading - would remain.
