Community, volunteers remember 9/11

September 10th, 2011 in News

Members of the military, Missouri Highway Patrol, police and firefighters stand during the Pledge of Allegiance and national anthem at the start of Friday's Remembrance Ceremony in the Capitol Rotunda.

Community members, volunteers and military gathered at the Capitol on Friday morning to remember and honor those who have served on and since Sept. 11.

Through the Missouri Community Service Commission and the Missouri Department of Economic Development, emergency responders and others who were affected by the events of that day spoke about the values of volunteerism while remembering those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 attacks and in the days, and years, following.

"Today, we are here to encourage service," said Fifth Ward Councilman and master of ceremonies Dave Griffith. "Sept. 11, 2001, was a defining moment in our lives ... The lives of many Americans were changed forever."
