Students, adults to color downtown with chalk art

September 9th, 2011 in News

More than 120 students and another 35-plus adults and professional artists will color the downtown sidewalks with chalk today and Saturday.

The seventh Street Art Festival by Capital Arts is part of the three-day Connect to the Arts events along High and Madison streets.

Recognizing the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, the students today will draw from the theme "America United In Remembrance of 9/11."

Students from Russellville High School and Middle School, as well as from the Jefferson City Academic Center, will design in the morning. And art club members from Cedar Hill and West elementary schools and Simonsen Ninth Grade Center will work on their chalk art in the afternoon.

Then, Saturday artists will be divided into skill and age categories, from elementary to adult professional, for cash prizes.

By the time the 11 a.m. Labor Day Parade is over, the chalk artists should be well on their way along Madison Street. And the works of art should be completed by 6 p.m.
