Harley-Davidson gives $3M for muscular dystrophy

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Harley-Davidson Motor Co. says it donated $3 million during the 2011 Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day Telethon.

The motorcycle company says with Sunday's gift, it has given the charity $79 million over 31 years.

Harley's donation accounted for 5 percent of the telethon's total fundraising. MDA officials say the telethon raised nearly $61.5 million. That's up about $2.6 million over last year.

Harley's fundraising efforts included pledge rides, dealer fundraisers, motorcycle raffles, fundraising dinners and sales of commemorative pins.

Harley says the MDA's largest fundraising event in the country is the annual Ride for Life. It says the 2011 event was organized by the Pennsylvania Eastern Harley-Davidson Dealers Association and raised nearly $1 million.
