Linn mother sentenced to 10 years

Rachel Sweet will spend most of the next decade in prison.

Osage County Circuit Judge Gael Wood on Friday sentenced Sweet, 29, Linn, to seven years for her July 7 guilty plea to endangering the welfare of a child and three years, to be served after the first sentence is completed, for her guilty plea to an involuntary manslaughter charge.

Wood imposed the sentences after denying Public Defender John Tomlin's request for a continuance in the case.

Prosecutor Amanda Grellner filed the charges

March 17, based on interviews the sheriff's office conducted with Sweet, her mother and her 7-year-old daughter.

In a probable cause statement, Sheriff Carl Fowler said he believed Sweet put the baby in the bathtub "during the late evening hours of March 7th or early morning hours of March 8th," then fell asleep or unconscious "as a result of the ingestion of prescription medication, consumption of alcohol or (some) combination thereof."

The boy was found face down in the water on the morning of March 8.
