Your Opinion: All belief systems contain wisdom

Your Opinion: All belief systems contain wisdom

October 19th, 2011 by Frank Rycyk, 406 Chestnut St. in News

Dear Editor:

"The quest for truth is its sacrament ..." These are words from our Unitarian Universalist Affirmation of Covenant. We admit that we do not have all of the answers. We are searching.

Contrast this to some of the ideas expressed in this venue. Pro-Christians tend to be absolute in their statements. Anti-Christians likewise.

Does anybody have a monoply on truth? There is much wisdom in Christianity. There is much wisdom in Islam. Likewise for other religious beliefs.

Are any of these religions perfect? I don't think so. All of these religions involve people. Are people perfect? Is there a chance that somebody could have made a mistake somewhere in the conveying of religious truths?

I do not pretend that Unitarian Universalism is perfect. I hear many extreme views expressed.

What I am suggesting is that we learn to learn from each other. If you are a Christian, visit a mosque. If you are a Muslim, visit a church. Christians are people. Muslims are people. Even atheists are people.

When we learn to see each other as people we will be moving forwards.

I thank the News Tribune, again for providing this venue. A lively exchange can be invigorating. Occasionally it can be enlightening.
