Firefighters: Smoke alarms needed in every home

Fire tours, activities planned for fire prevention week

October 9th, 2011 in News

Getting working smoke alarms in as many Jefferson City homes and businesses as possible will be the focus this week as part of fire prevention week.

"Many homes in Jefferson City may not have any smoke alarms, not enough smoke alarms, alarms that are too old, or alarms that are not working," said Jason Turner, public information officer of the Jefferson City Fire Department.

Statistics from the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) show that working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire nearly in half. But they must be working properly to do so.
