Former Mo. tax collector indicted for embezzlement

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The former Schuyler County collector has been indicted on a federal mail fraud charge alleging she embezzled about $550,000 from taxpayers.

The U.S. Attorney's office said Friday that 51-year-old Kathy Sue Roberts is charged with diverting some taxes collected by her office for personal use.

Roberts resigned in August after state auditors found that some tax dollars had been misappropriated in the northeastern Missouri county. She had served as the county collector since 1987. The U.S attorney's office alleges the embezzlement began in 1992 and continued until this past August.

No one answered a telephone call Friday to Roberts' home in the rural northern community of Downing.

She is scheduled to appear in federal court Oct. 7.
