Friday's NHL Preseason Capsules

WASHINGTON (AP) - Nicklas Backstrom scored in the sixth round of a shootout to give the Washington Capitals a 4-3 preseason win over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night.

Backstrom also netted the Capitals' first goal against Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller. Mike Green and Matt Hendricks also scored, with Hendricks tying the game 3-3 with 6:27 remaining in the third period.

Thomas Vanek scored two goals and assisted on Jason Pominville's goal for Buffalo, which dropped to 4-2.

Alex Ovechkin has yet to score in the preseason, but assisted on the first two goals for the Capitals, 2-3-1 in the preseason. He and Alexander Semin scored in the shootout.

Tomas Vokoun made 29 saves for Washington.

Penguins 4, Blackhawks 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Steve Sullivan, Matt Cooke, Joe Vitale and Evgeni Malkin scored, and Pittsburgh held on to beat Chicago remain perfect in preseason play.

Brent Johnson stopped 35 shots for the Penguins (5-0-0).

Rookie Brandon Pirri scored two goals for the Blackhawks (2-3-1) and Ray Emery, competing for the backup job with rookie Alexander Salak, started and stopped 15 shots.

Maple Leafs 4, Red Wings 3, OT

DETROIT (AP) - Mike Komisarek scored 2:21 into overtime to propel Toronto to victory.

Mike Brown added two goals and Jake Gardiner a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, while Jonas Gustavsson stopped 26 shots.

Todd Bertuzzi, Gustov Nyquist and Johan Franzen scored for Detroit. Thomas Holmstrom had two assists and Jimmy Howard made 15 saves.

Devils 1, Islanders 0

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Johan Hedberg made 16 saves and David Clarkson scored a power-play goal in the first period to lead New Jersey.

Clarkson's goal at 11:28 of the opening period was his first of the preseason for New Jersey (2-3-0).

Rick DiPietro stopped 20 shots for the Islanders (1-3-0), making a spectacular save in turning away Vladimir Zharkov on a semi-breakaway in the second period and David Steckel's 2-on-1 attempt in the third.

New York rookie center Ryan Strome received a five-minute major and a 10-minute misconduct for boarding Stephen Gionta with 3:14 remaining.

Blue Jackets 3, Hurricanes 2

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Martin St. Pierre scored with 8:25 remaining and Columbus finished the preseason 5-2-1.

Alexandre Giroux and R.J. Umberger also scored for the Blue Jackets.

Patrick Dwyer and Jussi Jokinen had the Hurricanes' goals.

Oilers 4, Wild 3, SO

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Anton Lander scored in the second round of the shootout and Devan Dubnyk made three shootout saves for Edmonton.

Lander also had a goal and an assist in regulation as the Oilers rallied from two goals down with less than 10 minutes to play. Ryan Jones and Linus Omark also scored for Edmonton (5-2). Dubnyk made 22 saves for Edmonton, which will complete its postseason Saturday night by hosting Vancouver.

Mikko Koivu, Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Devin Setoguchi scored for Minnesota (3-4), while Niklas Backstrom stopped 34 shots in the Wild's preseason finale.

Predators 3, Jets 2, SO

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Cal O'Reilly scored in regulation and the only goal in the shootout to lift Nashville over Winnipeg.

The Predators (6-1-0) controlled the first period and O'Reilly opened the scoring when he banged in a rebound off Jordan Tootoo's slap shot from the point.

Winnipeg (3-3-1) came to life after a fight early in the second period between Tanner Glass and Nashville's Zack Stortini, outshooting the Predators 16-3 as Andrew Ladd tied things by flipping in the rebound of Bryan Little's backhand after it bounced away from Nashville goalie Anders Lindback.

David Legwand put the Predators back on top 7:28 into the third, before Mark Scheifele tied it up with 6:53 left.

Kings 3, Ducks 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Defenseman Willie Mitchell got the go-ahead goal at 14:17 of the third period, Mike Richards also scored and Jonathan Bernier made 28 saves for Los Angeles in a preseason victory over Anaheim.

Teemu Selanne scored for the Ducks, who had won their previous three games.

Jonas Hiller stopped 12 of 13 shots for Anaheim before Dan Ellis replaced him midway through the second period with the Ducks trailing 1-0.

Hiller has given up just three goals on 67 shots in three preseason starts after a lengthy bout with vertigo following the All-Star break. Ellis turned aside 16 of the 17 shots he faced.

Anze Kopitar scored an empty-net goal for the Kings with 26 seconds to play.
