Human remains found near La Monte

LA MONTE, Mo. (AP) - Skeletal remains have been found near a wooded area in Pettis County.

And the sheriff's office says an autopsy is planned for Monday to determine the identity of the victim and the cause of death.

Sheriff Kevin Bond told the Sedalia Democrat (http://bit.ly/uNuqkh) that foul play hasn't been ruled out.

The investigation began Friday after a passing motorist reported seeing clothing and bones near U.S. 50 in an area about one mile east of La Monte.

The sheriff's office says the victim was likely a male who had been hitchhiking or walking along the highway several months ago. The victim apparently stopped to camp in the wooded area.

Evidence recovered at the scene shows the victim wasn't from the area, but had been in Sedalia in June or July.
