Bridge work worrisome for some in St. Charles

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) - The pending yearlong shutdown of a major bridge on Interstate 70 is proving worrisome for many businesses in the St. Charles area.

Plans call for major repairs to the Blanchette Bridge over the Missouri River starting in April. Westbound lanes will be rerouted to the eastbound span, which will likely cause backups for I-70 drivers.

St. Charles interim finance director Jerry Ponder said that because of expected bridge tie-ups, the city is projecting flat tax revenue next year from Ameristar Casino.

But some owners of Main Street businesses say they're not overly concerned, citing plans to use digital message boards and other means to make drivers aware of alternative routes.
