Families should celebrate holiday's origin

Turkey, football and the anticipation of door-busting Black Friday sales are the staple traditions of Thanksgiving for many Americans.

While Thanksgiving is one of the least commercialized holidays, it is easy to forget its true meaning as the candy and costumes of Halloween give way to the frenzied gift giving and party planning of the holiday season.

It is particularly easy for children to overlook the value of Thanksgiving, but there is a lot that parents can do to use Nov. 25 as a day to promote thankfulness and gratitude.

Paula Johnson, MSW, LCSW, is a licensed counselor and child play therapist in Jefferson City. She said Thanksgiving activities that center on appreciation and spirituality, volunteerism, patriotism and diversity can show children the importance of the day.
