$10 million settlement in Mo. asbestos lawsuit

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) - The family of a longtime Jackson County Courthouse employee has accepted a $10 million settlement in a lawsuit involving the handling of asbestos at the courthouse.

The settlement of a lawsuit filed by Nancy Lopez against U.S. Engineering Co. was announced Friday.

The St. Joseph News-Press reports (http://bit.ly/sU5F3r) Lopez died in October 2010 from mesothelioma, a form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.

Her lawsuit accused the engineering firm of not following proper procedures while working with the asbestos at the courthouse in Kansas City, where Lopez worked for 27 years.

Her attorney, Lou Accurso, says it is the largest asbestos settlement in Missouri.

A class action lawsuit seeking expenses to monitor several courthouse employees' who are susceptible to mesothelioma hasn't been settled.
