MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) - The Americans kept the lead in the Presidents Cup, and they still don't have a point from Tiger Woods.
In some of the toughest conditions ever at Royal Melbourne, Aaron Baddeley and Jason Day earned a small measure of redemption by holding on to beat Woods and Dustin Johnson on the 18th hole that helped the International team split the six fourball matches Friday.
The Americans led 7-5 going into a double session Saturday with 10 points at stake.
Woods is 0-2 for the first time ever in this event, and the first time in any team competition since he and Phil Mickelson lost their opening two matches at the 2004 Ryder Cup.
The state of his game was tough to measure, as was the case with any other player. The wind was vicious. On a sand belt course with fast greens, the most telling statistic was that 13 holes in the six matches were won with pars - a rarity in the better-ball format.
One day after Baddeley and Day bogeyed the last two holes and had to settle for a halve, Baddeley came through in the clutch with a tough par on the last hole - right after Woods nearly chipped in for birdie from behind the green - to help keep the International team in the game.
Woods was the only American without a point. His game looks fine. The numbers are shocking.
His partnerships - Steve Stricker in foursomes Thursday, Johnson in fourballs Friday - has won only one hole in two matches. That came on the fourth hole Friday when Woods rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt. The lead lasted only four holes, however, as Baddeley and Day squared the match with a par on the eighth.
Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson beat Ernie Els and Ryo Ishikawa for second straight day, 3 and 1. Mickelson and Jim Furyk edged Adam Scott and K.T. Kim, and Stricker and Matt Kuchar topped Y.E. Yang and Robert Allenby 4 and 3. For the Interational team, Geoff Ogilvy and K.J. Choi beat Bill Haas and Nick Watney 1-up, and Retief Goosen and Charl Schwartzel topped Hunter Mahan and David Toms 2 and 1.
TITLEHOLDERS
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Na Yeon Choi shot a 6-under 66 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead over Morgan Pressel and Karrie Webb after the first round of the LPGA Tour's season-ending Titleholders.
Choi, the LPGA Malaysia winner last month, birdied five of the first eight holes on the back nine at Grand Cypress before dropping a stroke with a bogey on the par-4 18th.
Defending champion Maria Hjorth and Cristie Kerr shot 68, and Anna Nordqvist was another stroke back along with Paula Creamer, Sandra Gal, Mi Hyun Kim, Candie Kung, Azahara Munoz and Dewi Claire Schreefel.
Top-ranked Yani Tseng had a 70, and Michelle Wie opened with a 71.
CHAMPIONS TOUR NATIONAL QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Gary Hallberg and Jeff Freeman shot 5-under 66s on Thursday to share the third-round lead in the Champions Tour National Qualifying Tournament at TPC Scottsdale's Champions Course.
Hallberg and Freeman had 15-under 198 totals with one round remaining.
Canada's Jim Rutledge, the 36-hole leader, was two strokes back after a 70.
The final top five will earn exempt status for the 2012 season until the reorder, while the next seven players will be conditionally exempt. In addition, the top 30 finishers and ties will be eligible to compete for spots in open qualifiers at all co-sponsored events.
PEBBLE BEACH INVITATIONAL
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Kyle Thompson, set to rejoin the PGA Tour after finishing 21st on the Nationwide Tour money list this year, had a hole-in-one and shot an 8-under 64 at Pebble Beach Thursday to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Pebble Beach Invitational.
Thompson aced the 109-yard seventh, his 16th hole of the round. He also had seven birdies and a bogey.
Jason Kokrak, a two-time winner this year on the Nationwide Tour who finished fourth on the developmental tour's money list, had a 7-under 65 at Del Monte.
ALFRED DUNHILL CHAMPIONSHIP
MALELANE, South Africa (AP) - England's Seve Benson and South Africa's Jbe Kruger shot 8-under 64s on Thursday to share the lead in the suspended first round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship.
Twenty-four players were unable to complete the round because of darkness. The temperatures hit 105 degrees in the European and Sunshine tour event at Leopard Creek.
ISKANDAR JOHOR OPEN
BAHRU, Malaysia (AP) - Dutchman Joost Luiten shot an 8-under 63 on Thursday to take the lead in the suspended first round of the Iskandar Johor Open.
Only 78 of the 156 players in the European and Asian tour event completed the rounds after lightning halted play in the early evening.
