As a result of an apparent error in Jefferson City's charter, City Council races with two candidates will be decided in the February primary, not the April general election.
After city residents adopted nonpartisan elections in 2002, charter language was revised to drop the reference to political parties. The number of candidates, however, remained specified at "two or more."
Cole County Clerk Marvin Register, the local election authority, recently noticed the glitch and called it to the attention of city officials.
Although consensus exists among city officials that the number should be changed from two to three, charter revisions require a vote of the people.
