Compromise reached on St. Louis police initiative

November 11th, 2011 in News

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - St. Louis police officers say they have an agreement with supporters of a ballot measure to end state oversight of the city's police department.

The group called A Safer Missouri said Thursday that it filed a new proposal of the St. Louis police measure that could appear on next year's ballot. Supporters say the new version matches an earlier compromise. The St. Louis Police Officers Association says it agreed to the compromise.

The issue of control over the police department has percolated for several years. It was among several issues to falter in a recent special legislative session because of stall economic development efforts. The St. Louis mayor and four others appointed by the governor serve on a state board that oversees the police. The board was established in 1861.
