SE Missouri man shot, killed by police officer

CHARLESTON, Mo. (AP) - The Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal shooting of southeast Missouri man by a Charleston police officer.

KFVS-TV reports (http://bit.ly/tAyszl) Tuesday's confrontation began when police in the Bootheel community received a call about a mentally disturbed man.

Patrol Trooper Clark Parrott says after being followed by police in a car, the man threw a rock at an officer, than ran into a house and came out with a sword. Parrott says the man nicked Police Chief Robert Hearnes on the hand with the sword.

The trooper says police used a stun gun on the man twice, but he continued to approach them and was shot by an officer.

The man's name has not been released.
