Firefighters battle business fire

November 4th, 2011 in News

A mechanical problem with an industrial shredder is believed to have caused a fire at a recycling business Thursday night in Jefferson City.

According to fire department reports, the fire at Federal Recycling, 2730 W. Main, was called in around 10:30 p.m.

When crews arrived on the scene they found smoke coming out of the building.

Once inside, firefighters found the shredder was on fire along with paper around the shredder.

Employees had tried to put the fire out with several fire extinguishers before the firefighters got on the scene.

Fire crews were able to contain the fire to the area around the shredder, but the entire business, which is several thousand square feet in size, had to be ventilated of smoke.

It took crews about 45 minutes to ventilate the building along with an area of the building used by Modine Manufacturing.

No injuries were reported.

Crews did not clear the scene until around 12:45 a.m., Friday.
