City staff's duties shift after firing

The city cannot slow down for anything - even a firing.

Although the Jefferson City Council only announced Tuesday that Steve Rasmussen has been terminated as city administrator, city officials are already working to return a sense of normalcy to City Hall.

The one person who arguably is working as hard as anyone is Nathan Nickolaus.

Along with the announcement of Rasmussen's termination, the city announced that Nickolaus, the current city attorney, will take on the title of interim city administrator.

Nickolaus said he was present at Monday night's closed session when the council voted 9-0 to terminate Rasmussen's contract and found out soon after that he was the choice to replace the city administrator for the short term.

He said he has already taken some steps in preparation to handle the new responsibilities.

"Typically, this process takes about six months," Nickolaus said. "That's what I've braced my family for. It could be less, and that would great. It could be longer, and that would be all right, too. But six months is about average."
