A Jefferson City man is charged with first-degree robbery and armed criminal action for an incident that occurred in January.
According to a police department probable cause statement, Terrance Thomas, 44, 912 E. High St., committed the crimes just after 9 a.m. Jan. 6 at 316 Jackson St.
Thomas approached a woman, who was alone in her business office, and asked her for an insurance quote.
After being admitted inside, Thomas told the woman to give him her money and her car. Thomas then took the victim's purse, where he found her car keys. Thomas asked where the car was and she pointed toward the rear door of the business.
Thomas pushed the victim down the hall to the rear of the business where the victim fell on the floor. Thomas then got on top of the victim and placed a serrated blade knife to her throat and threatened to kill her.
Thomas locked the victim in a bathroom and fled out the rear door where he took the victims' car.
The victim didn't see Thomas again until April 14, when she saw him as he was leaving the Cole County Jail after posting bond on an unrelated arrest.
When questioned, Thomas admitted to committing the robbery, but said he had a history of mental illness and that it was the "voices" that made him do it. He said he listens to what the voices tell him to do and will do whatever is necessary to protect himself.
