A Jefferson City man is facing several charges after leading a Cole County Sheriff's Department deputy on a chase Thursday night and eventually crashing his vehicle.
According to court documents, Jonathan Null, 18, 4921 Wardsville Road, has been charged with resisting a lawful stop, careless and imprudent driving and driving while intoxicated.
A sheriff's department probable cause statement shows the incident occurred around 8:26 p.m.
A vehicle driven by Null came toward a deputy on Bald Hill Road in the eastbound lanes, traveling at a high rate of speed and several feet across the center stripe of the road.
Null passed the deputy, and the deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop. Null turned right on Roling Road before the deputy could catch up to him.
The deputy followed Null east onto Roling Road and again tried to initiate a stop. Null failed to yield to the deputy and continued on Roling Road to Route M. Null went east on M traveling at a high rate of speed and nearly caused a head-on crash at M and Kolb Road as he passed a vehicle into oncoming traffic.
As he neared the intersection at Sunrise Acres, Null forced another vehicle off the road. Null then made a right turn onto Falcon Lane and continued at a high rate of speed on Falcon Lane toward Wardsville Road.
As the deputy crested a hill, he saw heavy smoke from an area just west of the intersection. The deputy found Null's vehicle had crashed into a utility pole.
Null was found inside the vehicle, and a check of his license found that he had a fake driver's license which he said he used to purchase alcohol.
According to the report, a strong odor of liquor was coming from Null's breath.
