Your Opinion: View on county sales tax #2

Dear Editor:

Being an informed voter is very important in this day and age. Mr. Williams May 5 comment on a tax increase (which is not an increase but a continuing tax that was initiated over 20 years ago!), shows the lack of interest or knowledge that voters fail to engage.

This is an overall far tax for those that travel, enter into, or do business in any part of Cole County and Jefferson City. One-half of one cent is so small that one won't notice it but the overall advantage is that it helps keep our property taxes from being increased.

I helped promote the sales tax in 1986 with my time, phone calls, and the importance of accurate information to get the tax passed. It was considered a win-win situation in allowing our county to initiate projects that would enhance our way of life and bring new residents to our community.

I was a former public works employee for Cole County who kept track of expenditures and helped with committee information who oversaw the sales tax projects. The Road and Bridge Committee is represented by a resident in each voting township of the county. We have had farmers, real estate professionals, business owners, former construction workers, or highway engineers as members that kept us fair and justified in the projects we completed.

I want people to be informed, check things out on there own, and make the wise decision when it comes to voting on items. I know what this particular tax has done and what it will proceed to do. I am a property owner in Cole County and reside in Kansas City now, I only wish we had this type of sales tax in the Kansas City area.
