Nixon signs education funding

At ceremony in Linn

LINN, Mo. - As Gov. Jay Nixon on Monday signed the bill adding more money to the state budget for the rest of the current business year, that ends June 30, he urged the state Senate to make sure another bill using federal funds also gets passed this week.

The measure Nixon signed at the Linn R-2 High School includes federal stimulus money, and the governor noted some state senators wanted to turn that money back to show Missouri's concern with Congress' over-spending and over-borrowing.

"These federal funds are a vital part of the plan that I outlined (in January), and that the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved, to provide stable funding for our classroom from fiscal year 2011 to fiscal year 2012," Nixon told reporters and Osage County school officials during the bill-signing ceremony.

"The federal law that authorized these education funds was crystal clear - if we had turned away these funds, they would have gone to other schools in other states."
