SEMO initiative to look at future of education

March 27th, 2011 in News

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - Southeast Missouri State University is planning a new initiative to look at university education in the future.

It's called "Southeast in the Year 2020."

Southeast Missouri State University President Kenneth W. Dobbins says in a news release that "colleges and universities that ignore the trends shaping the future will cease to be relevant and will quickly decline in quality and enrollment."

A steering committee has been picked to lead the initiative. The members include university professors, department heads and the president of student government.

The committee will examine issues such as how best to reach students through their smartphones and tablet computers.

Dobbins says students may want to pursue more short-term or certificate programs in specific areas and that degree offerings may need to change.
