Winter Weather Advisory lifted for Mid-Missouri

UPDATE: The Winter Weather Advisory has been lifted for Central Missouri. It remains in effect until midnight Saturday for the St. Louis area.

There is a Freeze Warning in effect for Central Missouri through 9 a.m. Sunday. The National Weather Service advises that overnight temperatures will drop to 25 to 30 degrees, endangering plants that are vulnerable because of recent warm weather.

A fast moving storm system will continue to bring significant snow accumulation to a large portion of central and eastern Missouri and southwest Illinois before ending early Sunday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) expects the greatest snowfall totals to occur in a band from California, Mo., extending to the east northeast through the St. Louis metro area to Salem, Ill. Totals of 3 to 6 inches are expected in the heaviest band, with 1 to 3 inches expected on either side of that. Southern portions of the storm area also have experienced rain or sleet mixed with snow, but that should become all snow overnight.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until midnight tonight for much of Mid-Missouri, including Boone, Audrain, Moniteau, Cole, Osage, Callaway, Miller, Morgan, Montgomery, Gasconade, Pettis, Warren, Washington, Crawford and Franklin counties, and the cities of Columbia, Mexico, Jefferson City, California, Sedalia, Eldon, Camdenton, Osage Beach and Union.

The NWS also advises:

  • TIMING...SNOW WILL CONTINUE INTO THE EVENING HOURS.
  • ACCUMULATIONS...TOTAL SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS IN THE 3 TO 6 INCH RANGE ARE EXPECTED...WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE.
  • WINDS...NORTHEAST WINDS OF 15 TO 20 MPH ARE EXPECTED.
  • IMPACTS...TRAVEL CONDITIONS WILL BE VERY HAZARDOUS DUE TO DECREASED VISIBILITY AND ACCUMULATIONS ON THE ROADWAYS. MOTORISTS SHOULD BE ALERT FOR RAPIDLY CHANGING ROAD CONDITIONS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT UP TO 6 INCHES OF SNOW IS EXPECTED ACROSS THE ADVISORY AREA. ROADS MAY RAPIDLY BECOME SLIPPERY ONCE THE SNOW BEGINS...SO MOTORISTS SHOULD PLAN FOR A SLOWER THAN NORMAL TRIP. BE ESPECIALLY ALERT WHEN APPROACHING BRIDGES...OVERPASSES...AND CURVES.
