Play's older themes still hold true

Unscrupulous businessmen and less-than-perfect real estate deals might sound like the subjects of some of the most recent national news reports.

But those are the tools with which the cast members of Scene One Theatre's newest production, the David Mamet classic "Glengarry Glen Ross," get to work.

Director Jack Renner summed up the show in simple terms that were as timeless when they were first written in 1982 as they are today.

"Mamet is basically writing about the brutal power about the tough life of tough characters who wheel and deal to get that first piece of the action," Renner said.

"Glengarry Glen Ross" tells the story of four real estate salesmen in Chicago who are trying to sell the Glengarry Highlands and Glen Ross Farms in Florida, which, as Renner explains, "may not be much more than swamp land."

Renner pointed out that the show has strong language and is not appropriate for children.

The show in Jefferson City will run Friday and Saturday and again on March 31-April 2. All performances start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for all shows, except for the March 31 performance, which is $5. Tickets can be purchased by calling Scene One Theatre at 573-681-9199.
