Your Opinion: Sharia law applied in court case

Dear Editor:

I would like to shed a little light onto the opinions expressed that legislation to prohibit Missouri courts from applying laws from foreign countries, especially Sharia law, is not necessary. The thinking behind this is that every judge takes an oath to uphold the Constitution and U.S. laws and that no circumstances are known of a U.S. court ruling based on foreign laws.

Please be advised that just four or five months ago a New Jersey judge ruled against a sexual assault charge on a Muslim man accused of raping his wife. The judge's reason for dismissal was because Islam forbids wives to refuse sex with their husbands. Did this judge somehow escape the swearing-in ceremony? Fortunately, the appellate court overturned this decision.

Rather than ridiculing the representatives for bringing this legislation forward, I think they should be applauded.
