Man accused of Waldo rapes pleads not guilty

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A 53-year-old Kansas City man accused in a string of rapes in the city's Waldo neighborhood has pleaded not guilty to 22 counts stemming from attacks in late 2009 and early 2010.

Bernard Jackson appeared in a Jackson County courtroom Friday shackled but otherwise sharply dressed. The Kansas City Star reports he said nothing during his arraignment hearing and the plea was entered for him.

Jackson is charged with burglary, kidnapping, felonious restraint, sodomy, rape, sexual abuse and robbery.

He also is facing charges in four sexual assaults from 1983 and 1984 in the same area of Kansas City. He was arrested last year on those charges while he was on parole for an attempted-rape conviction from 1985.

His next court appearance is set for May 27.
