Youth CERT offers disaster skills lessons

Young people in Cole County can learn basic, critical skills that would be needed in the event of a disaster through the Youth CERT (Community Emergency Response Team).

Classes for youth ages 12-18 will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. on March 24 and 31, April 14, 21 and 28 in Jefferson City at Emergency Management, 1736 South Ridge Dr.

Cost is $15 payable to the Cole County Extension Center, 2436 Tanner Bridge Road.

Topics will include disaster preparedness and mitigation, light search and rescue, disaster first-aid, emotional first aid, disaster teamwork, disaster communications, animals in disaster and technology in disaster preparation.

In addition to the federal CERT program skills, youth will be introduced to career opportunities within the emergency response field.
