Open-burning season to end Tuesday

With spring just around the corner, the annual period to legally burn leaves, grass clippings and vegetation grown on property will end next week in Jefferson City.

Residents are allowed to burn until dark Tuesday.

Personnel with the Jefferson City Fire Department have been working with neighborhoods to educate residents of the ordinance. Violators of the ordinance are subject to citations.

Fire officials ask residents to not burn in the street or curb lines of the street. It is recommended that all fires be in small piles to prevent large amounts of smoke, and that the piles be 10-15 feet from property lines, structures and power lines.

Residents are asked to use the compost facilities the city offers on Southridge Drive.

The open-burning season will return Nov. 15.
